Description:
An exquisitely carved
Chinese cinnabar lacquer box from the late Meiji period. The lid of the
box features a bird in the branches of a tree
Cinnabar lacquer
was produced by mixing the sap of the lac tree with a mineral called cinnabar.
Cinnabar is rich in mercury and when ground into a fine powder produces
a deep red tint.
The lacquer was
applied in multiple, individual coats to a base of wood or metal. The lacquer
was then intricately carved. Some pieces took up to ten years to produce.
It is recommended
that one minimize exposure to these older pieces to prevent contamination.
True cinnabar lacquer pieces are rarely produced today, instead carvers
use a simulated chemical cinnabar in their lacquer.
